GED AFRICA HOSTS LENDERS & TECHNICAL ADVISORS ON SITE

GED Africa and their local teams, in both the DRC and Zambia, hosted a delegation of lenders and the technical advisors for a journey along the project’s planned route.

Kasenga, The Democratic Republic of Congo, September 10 – GED Africa hosted a delegation of lenders and their technical advisors on a site visit journey along the GED Africa Route, the Kasomeno-Mwenda Toll Road Project. Both the DRC and Zambia segments were assessed, starting the tour in Lubumbashi and stopping in; Kasomeno, Kasenga, Chalwe, Kashiba, Mwenda and the future bridge site.

This site visit forms part of the due diligence required by lenders to assess the key aspects of the project: financial viability, technical feasibility, and socio-economic impact. The delegation included representatives from Duna Group, African Finance Corporation, Trade Development Bank, Zutari, Rankin Engineering, Eaglestone, ACGT, RDA, provincial authorities, and key local stakeholders.

We’ve included a series of captions and photos to take you on a virtual journey along the GED Africa Route.

The harsh rainy season typically starts in mid-October, which is providing added impetus to the ongoing maintenance work GED Congo is driving on the Kasomeno-Kasenga road. This segment is a vital link for community access to resources and markets.

Early and ongoing stakeholder engagement helps to foster an open dialogue with our communities. Our lenders’ site visit included meetings with key local government representatives, chiefs, and community members to ensure that the project has been correctly communicated and is aligned with international ESIA best practice.

From the Zambia start/end point of the Route, we journeyed from Mwenda to Kashiba (71.3km), then south (18.9km) to the turnoff for the future bridge and Chalwe, site of Zambia’s one-stop border post (OSBP). The 1.5km turnoff from the main road to the bridge site is part of GED Zambia’s completed early works.

Crossing the Luapula river via pontoon at the current Kashiba border post back into DRC facilitated an assessment of GED Congo’s early works scope. This included the greenfield 11.5 km segment of road from Makungu to Kaluba. Finally, we continued down to the site of the future bridge and the DRC’s one-stop border post.
